Huge 1,000-year-old Viking Ship Grave Found in Norway
Beneath some unsuspecting Norwegian farmland, a 1,000-year-old Viking site consisting of several burial mounds, the remnants of a ship, a large feasting hall and a cult house have been discovered by archaeologists in Ostfold County, Norway. “The site seems to have belonged to the very top echelon of the Iron Age elite of the area, and would have been a focal point for the exertion of political and social control of the region,” writes Lars Gustavsen, the leader of the project, in the journal Antiquity.
The earliest period for the Gjellestad site dates to around the fifth and sixth centuries. It later transformed into a high-status Viking settlement and cemetery.
The Gjellestad site is the home of the Jell Mound—one of the largest Iron Age burial grounds in Scandinavia. A landowner first discovered it in 2017 when requesting permission to build drainage ditches across the field near the mound, with experts confirming the find in autumn 2018.
This prompted archaeologists—led by Gustavsen and his team from the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research—to inspect the area using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), to map out what lay underneath. They soon discovered 13 burial mounds, varying in size. Some measured over 30m wide while the anomaly amongst them—interpreted as the remains of a Viking ship—was 19m long.
Ship burials were not an unusual way for Vikings to transition to the afterlife and were seen as a way to honour their heritage. “These societies were closely tied to the sea and seafaring,” Gustavsen adds. “It is only natural that they chose a familiar mode of transport from the realm of the living to the realm of the dead.”
These findings give archaeologists a better understanding of how the wealthy elite lived during the Late Nordic Iron Age (AD550-1050), a period of turmoil after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the rise of the Vikings. “Sites like these tell us that elite families or small communities were competing for control of land,” adds Gustavsen.
An excavation of the ship burial is now under way.

Russian Scientists Discovered Perfectly Preserved Body Of 800-Million-Year-Old Woman In A Marble Casket
A bizarre story that originated from the conspiracy theory blogosphere going viral on social media claims that in 1969, Soviet scientists covered up the discovery of a perfectly preserved 800-million-year-old human body. The perfectly preserved 800-million-year-old body of a beautiful girl was found inside an intricately designed marble casket at a coal mine outside the remote village of Rzhavchik Tisulskago in the Kemerovo region of Russia.
While many readers on Disclose TV dismissed the story as a fabrication based on the fairy tale “Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs,” some out-of-place artifact conspiracy theorists argued that the story was authentic and that Soviet scientists conspired with the communist authorities to cover up the discovery of the body because it disproved Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
Some claimed that the story originated from a Russian language documentary (see YouTube below) first uploaded to YouTube in 2014. Others argued that the video stole images from a different case: the Taklamakan mummies discovered in the Chinese desert.
A Russian language video, according to versions subtitled in the English language, claims that the intricately crafted marble coffin containing the perfectly preserved body was found about 70 feet underground by local miners in 1969. The casket was first found by a miner identified as Karnaukhov.
Alexander Masalygina, the official in charge at the site located near the small and remote village of Rzhavchik Tisulskago in the Kemerovo region of Russia, ordered work to stop immediately after the miners discovered the mysterious and skilfully crafted marble coffin, according to the conspiracy theory blog Ancient Patriarchs.
Cave complex may lie beneath Giza Pyramids
An enormous system of caves, chambers and tunnels lies hidden beneath the Pyramids of Giza, according to a British explorer who claims to have found the lost underworld of the pharaohs.
Populated by bats and venomous spiders, the underground complex was found in the limestone bedrock beneath the pyramid field at Giza.
"There is untouched archaeology down there, as well as a delicate ecosystem that includes colonies of bats and a species of spider which we have tentatively identified as the white widow," British explorer Andrew Collins said.
Collins, who detailed his findings in the book "Beneath the Pyramids" which was published in September 2009, tracked down the entrance to the mysterious underworld after reading the forgotten memoirs of a 19th century diplomat and explorer.
"In his memoirs, British consul general Henry Salt recounts how he investigated an underground system of 'catacombs' at Giza in 1817 in the company of Italian explorer Giovanni Caviglia," Collins said.
The document records that the two explored the caves for a distance of "several hundred yards," coming upon four large chambers from which stretched further cave passageways.
With the help of British Egyptologist Nigel Skinner-Simpson, Collins reconstructed Salt's exploration on the plateau, eventually locating the entrance to the lost catacombs in an apparently unrecorded tomb west of the Great Pyramid.
Indeed, the tomb featured a crack in the rock, which led into a massive natural cave.
"We explored the caves before the air became too thin to continue. They are highly dangerous, with unseen pits and hollows, colonies of bats and venomous spiders," said Collins.
According to Collins, the caves — which are tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years old — may have both inspired the development of the pyramid field and the ancient Egyptian's belief in an underworld.
"Ancient funerary texts clearly allude to the existence of a subterranean world in the vicinity of the Giza pyramids," Collins told Discovery News.
Indeed, Giza was known anciently as Rostau, meaning the "mouth of the passages."
This is the same name as a region of the ancient Egyptian underworld known as the Duat.
"The 'mouth of the passages' is unquestionably a reference to the entrance to a subterranean cave world, one long rumored to exist beneath the plateau," Collins told Discovery News.
Collins' claim is expected to cause a stir in the Egyptological world.
Zahi Hawass, chief of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, has dismissed the discovery.
"There are no new discoveries to be made at Giza. We know everything about the plateau," he stated.
But Collins remarks that after extensive research, he found no mention of the caves in modern times.
"To the best of our knowledge nothing has ever been written or recorded about these caves since Salt's explorations. If Hawass does have any report related to these caves, we have yet to see it," Collins said.
