What was the Earth like at the time of the Giant Insects ? | Documentary History of the Earth

Have you ever come face to face with a dragonfly the size of a hawk?

If you had walked on the surface of the Earth in the Carboniferous period, it could have happened. When people talk about gigantism, they tend to think of the famous dinosaurs that roamed the Earth during the Jurassic, 150 million years ago. However, dragonflies, millipedes, spiders and even scorpions once reached exceptional sizes. This amazing evolution is due to the constraints imposed by the living environment.

But how did insects so small reach such large dimensions? And why did they become extinct?

Great Pyramids & Atlantis on 7,000 Year Ancient Relic? Ancient Egypt is Far Older Than They Say

According to our textbooks, the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt was built 4500 years ago, or in 2500 BC. However, they did not know that with absolute certainty because there are far too many unanswered questions and mysteries surrounding the ancient Egyptians. Let’s travel back to the past!

One of history's most perplexing mysteries rises from the Sahara in Egypt. Its stone eyes peer out of a nearly human-like face, surveying a land of ancient tombs and endless sand. It has withstood the ravages of time and witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations for millennia. Even after hundreds of years, the Great Sphinx of Giza remains a mystery. The Sphinx reveals another layer of mystery just as we think we've cracked its eternal riddles.

How Alexander the Great’s Tomb Was Stolen

It remains one of the most successful and significant thefts in history. In late 321 BC, a carefully-constructed plot was put into operation that would spark years of bloody conflict between rival warlords.

The target of the operation was Alexander the Great’s elaborate funeral carriage, designed as a miniature and gold-adorned mobile temple, and the conqueror’s talismanic corpse housed within.

Ptolemy and Perdiccas were at loggerheads. The former was the new governor of Egypt. The latter was the all-powerful regent of Alexander’s empire, whose authority theoretically stretched from Afghanistan to the Aegean. Both knew that war between them was all-but-inevitable. Rather than wait, Ptolemy aimed to provoke it on his terms – a pre-emptive strike. It was a huge risk, but one the governor believed he had to take if he would have any chance of victory.

At the end of 321 BC, Alexander the Great’s funeral carriage was heading west from Babylon to the Mediterranean. Perdiccas, who was then stationed in Pisidi, central Anatolia, with the royal army, wanted to take the body back to Macedonia. Returning with the dead king’s body to his homeland, and with the royal army in tow, was a key part of his grand plan to seize the throne.

But Ptolemy had other ideas. He wanted the body to come to Egypt, and he had prepared for this in advance. Colluding with Arrhidaeus, the general in command of the cortege’s escort, and Archon, the governor of Babylonia, they arranged to hijack the body and fatally damage Perdiccas’ grand imperial plans.

In late 321 BC they put the plan in motion. Upon arriving in Syria, Arrhidaeus and the funeral cart turned south towards Egypt. The theft was on. The thieves had a head start, but speed was not a luxury afforded to them. Even with the best suspension the ancients could create, the progress of the great carriage was painfully slow.

It was not long before Perdiccas received word of the cart’s new course and sent a special light-armed task force in pursuit. Its purpose: to retrieve the carriage and its precious cargo – by force if necessary. The chase was on.

In this documentary, Dr Chris Naunton and Tristan Hughes discuss the events of this great heist in antiquity.

Trier's Golden Treasure The "Golden Treasure Of Trier" Is The Largest Ever Discovered Roman Gold Treasure

The largest Roman gold hoard ever discovered was the "Trier Gold Hoard." The discovery, which included 2,500 gold pieces totaling 18.5 kg, was uncovered in 1993 during excavation work, approximately 1,800 years after it was hidden.

The 1993 discovery of the Trier Gold Hoard generated a lot of media attention. Further investigation indicated that it was likely an official treasury and not just someone's personal money. The treasury had been managed with care, and it had expanded over time. The Hoard was equivalent to about 130 Roman soldiers' yearly pay. There are a total of 27 emperors, empresses, and members of the imperial family shown on the aurei (gold coins), some of which are still regarded as being unique today.

What caused the coins to be buried?

During a civil war in 196 AD, the gold coins were interred in a cellar. When Clodius Albinus named his son Caracalla as the heir apparent rather than Albinus, Septimius Severus' rule was overthrown. It's likely that the former hoard manager carried the knowledge of the hidden cache with him to the afterlife.

Viewing methods for coins

Currently, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier's coin collection features this one-of-a-kind collection on display. One of Germany's largest archaeological museums, the state museum has an exhibition that features 12,000 coins in total. The Gold Hoard presentation room offers significant information on the development of the monetary system and how ancient, medieval, and modern money have been produced in addition to archaeological discoveries.
