The "grave goods" uncovered at the site included decorative items, weapons made from metal, and objects crafted from amber and glass. These findings suggest that the people who built the Trento necropolis were culturally connected to other Italic groups of the time.

Libyan Antiquities Authority Confirms Legal Transfer of Septimius Severus Statue to Tripol

Tripoli, February 17, 2025 – The Libyan Antiquities Authority has confirmed that the transfer of the statue of Emperor Septimius Severus from Al-Khoms to Tripoli was conducted in full compliance with Libyan laws.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the Authority clarified that the statue is a replica of those historical figures once displayed in Martyrs Square in Tripoli. These statues have been part of the square since its construction in the 1930s, but were removed and stored in the Authority’s warehouses in Tripoli. The Authority also mentioned that it proposed installing the statue at the entrance to Leptis Magna before relocating it once again to the garden of the new museum in the archaeological site.

The Antiquities Authority further explained that it had informed the Mayor of Khoms about the transfer over a month ago. Coordination was carried out with the Mayor of Tripoli, ensuring that all security measures were addressed and that communication with the relevant security directorates was maintained.

In addition, the Authority is currently assessing the possibility of returning the statue to its original place in Martyrs Square in Tripoli, recognizing the significant symbolism it holds for the Libyan people.

However, residents of Khoms have expressed their opposition to the statue’s relocation. They have issued an official statement calling for the transfer process to be halted and have opened a formal report to stop it.

Additionally, a pair of individuals who were thought to be sisters or a mother and daughter were found to include a man among them. This revelation, published in the journal Current Biology, offers a fresh perspective on the identities of those who perished in Pompeii.

Archaeologists from ArchaeoConnect and the State Office for Monument Preservation (LAD) have recently conducted the first significant study of Baden-Baden’s Roman Imperial Baths in 180 years.

A Rich History Beneath the Surface

Located beneath the market square and collegiate church in Baden-Baden, these baths were known as Aurelia Aquensis during Roman times, named after Emperor M. Aurelius Severus Alexander Augustus. The complex was one of the largest of its kind in the region of Baden-Württemberg.

Constructed in the late 1st century AD, the baths were built over the Florentinerberg hot springs, utilizing geothermal waters that rise from a depth of about 2,000 meters. This marks the first verified use of thermal springs by humans in Baden-Baden.

Excavations and New Discoveries

The Roman baths were first uncovered in the mid-1800s, revealing numerous rooms and thermal pools. However, research on the site had been minimal until recently.

In 2024, while sewer renovations were taking place, archaeologists from ArchaeoConnect took the opportunity to investigate newly exposed areas of the complex, covering 50 square meters. This provided fresh insights into the structure and design of the baths.

Key Findings

At just 1 meter below the surface, archaeologists discovered several Roman-period walls, some of which had not been recorded during earlier excavations in the 19th century. They also found hypocaust bricks, which are a clear indicator of the underfloor heating system used to warm the baths.

In the area where the largest known room of the complex was located, researchers uncovered multi-layered screed used to cover walls and floors with marble. They also found three well-preserved steps, likely used by bathers to enter a pool that was in use nearly 2,000 years ago.

While the new findings offer valuable insights into Aurelia Aquensis, they also highlight the damage caused by past construction projects. Sarah Roth from LAD explained that construction activities, such as the installation of a tunnel system in the late 19th century and recent canal and pipe installations, have caused significant harm to the ruins. Unlike other prestigious metals such as gold or gemstones, these iron objects were discovered in a variety of graves without signs of luxury burial goods. Dr. Jambon noted that while iron was once ten times more expensive than gold during the Bronze Age, its value dropped significantly in the early Iron Age, becoming even cheaper than copper.

The research team employed advanced techniques, including X-ray microtomography, to examine the internal structure of the artefacts. Their analysis confirmed that the metal originated from an ataxite meteorite, an extremely rare type of space rock with high nickel content.

Dr. Jambon’s research aims to trace the origins of iron smelting—the process of extracting iron from ore by heating it to high temperatures. “The goal of my study is to determine who first discovered iron smelting, when it happened, and where it took place.
