Given that metal corrodes in saltwater over time, it’s astonishing that nearly all the discovered coins remain in excellent condition. Reports indicate that only four out of the tens of thousands show any signs of damage.

This preservation is largely due to Roman currency storage methods. The coins, known as "folles," were typically stored in leather bags of standardized weight, a practice introduced by Emperor Diocletian (284–305 C.E.). Diocletian sought to stabilize the economy by standardizing currency, a policy later maintained by Constantine. The excellent condition of these coins offers historians a rare opportunity to study economic practices of the era.

Italy’s Ministry of Culture has emphasized the significance of this find, stating that the conservation and analysis of the coins could yield crucial insights into Roman history and trade.

Transporting such a large quantity of coins would have been no easy task, raising the question of how they ended up in the Mediterranean. The discovery site, near the town of Arzachena in northeastern Sardinia, was a shallow area covered in seagrass. The glimmer of metal catching the divers’ eyes suggests that the coins were close enough to the surface to reflect sunlight.

Authorities also uncovered amphorae—twin-handled ceramic jugs used in antiquity to store wine, oil, and grains—near the coins. The presence of these storage vessels strongly suggests that the hoard came from a sunken ship, likely a merchant vessel transporting goods and currency. A remarkable discovery at Dewars Farm Quarry in England has uncovered over 200 fossilized dinosaur footprints dating back 166 million years to the Middle Jurassic period. Discovery and Excavation

The footprints were first noticed in June 2024 by quarry worker Gary Johnson, who spotted unusual formations while clearing clay from the quarry floor. Intrigued by the strange bumps, he reached out to experts at Birmingham and Oxford University. In response, a team of 100 scientists conducted a week-long excavation, carefully unearthing the footprints. The site revealed five distinct trackways, with the longest stretching an impressive 492 feet (150 meters).

One of the most intriguing findings at the site was the overlap of carnivore and herbivore tracks, raising questions about whether these two species interacted. Researchers estimated that both dinosaurs moved at a pace similar to a human’s walking speed—approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) per hour.

“These footprints provide an extraordinary glimpse into the lives of dinosaurs, showcasing their movements, interactions, and the tropical environment they once inhabited,” explained Professor Kirsty Edgar from the University of Birmingham.

Advancements in Preservation and Research

This is not the first time dinosaur tracks have been found at Dewars Farm Quarry. In 1997, researchers discovered 40 sets of footprints, some extending up to 590 feet (180 meters). However, that section of the quarry is no longer accessible, and documentation at the time was limited due to the absence of digital cameras and drones.

The latest discovery, made public on January 2, 2025, is being extensively documented with modern technology. Scientists have captured over 20,000 high-resolution images and developed detailed 3D models to enable further research.

Significant Discoveries at Powys Museum

During a special "finds day" event held in January at y Gaer Museum in Brecon, members of the public from across Powys presented around fifty archaeological objects for examination. Among the discoveries were artifacts dating as far back as the Bronze Age, revealing fascinating insights into ancient history.

One of the standout finds was a flint scraper from Llanfrynach, estimated to originate from the Neolithic to early Bronze Age period, approximately between 4000 and 2200 BC. Another extraordinary discovery was a copper alloy flanged axe from Ystradfellte, which had been intentionally broken— a practice known as "ritual killing" before burial. Experts dated this artifact to the Middle Bronze Age, around 1500 to 1150 BC.

A Glimpse into the Iron Age and Beyond

A particularly intriguing find was a copper alloy vessel escutcheon shaped like an ox head, believed to date back to the late Iron Age, between 100 BC and 100 AD. Additionally, the event uncovered a variety of objects spanning different historical periods, including:

  • Roman brooches and coins

  • Medieval spindle whorls and harness pendants

  • Post-medieval trade weights, toys, belt mounts, and buckles

  • An 18th-century crucifix pendant

Community Engagement and Expert Collaboration

Cllr Richard Church, Cabinet Member for a Safer Powys, expressed enthusiasm for the event’s success, stating:
“It’s amazing to see the wide range of archaeological objects discovered in Powys and beyond. We appreciate the participation of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, as this event provides a fantastic opportunity for individuals who might not be able to travel to Cardiff to have their items examined and recorded.”

Beyond uncovering historical treasures, the event also introduced many attendees to y Gaer Museum for the first time. For some, this was also their first opportunity to have their finds officially documented for the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

Expanding Opportunities for Archaeological Exploration

The initiative aimed to make artifact identification more accessible to residents of Mid Wales who may not have the ability to travel to larger archaeological hubs. Objects were carefully examined by experts Adelle Bricking, based in Cardiff, and Nicola Kelly, based in Swansea. In total, 70 items from 13 finders were taken to Cardiff for further research.

The success of the event has inspired plans for future finds days, allowing more people to uncover and preserve important pieces of history. With continued community involvement and expert guidance, Powys remains a valuable hub for archaeological discoveries and historical preservation.

Professor Baukje de Roos, a nutritional scientist involved in the study, emphasized the significance of this research. “It’s crucial to understand how vitamin D in hair correlates with levels in the blood, which is currently the standard for diagnosing deficiency worldwide.”

This groundbreaking study is being conducted by National Museums NI in collaboration with leading institutions across the UK, Ireland, and Europe. Experts from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), National Museums of Ireland, Queen’s University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, University of Copenhagen, University of Glasgow, and the University of Bradford are all contributing to the research.

The Mystery of Her Death

One of the most intriguing aspects of this discovery is the manner of the Ballymacombs More Woman’s death. Osteoarchaeological analysis indicates she was intentionally decapitated, with cut marks on the vertebrae suggesting a ritualistic or sacrificial act—a common practice in Iron Age Europe. Her skull was not recovered, adding to the mystery surrounding her fate.

A Glimpse Into the Past

Alongside her remains, archaeologists discovered a woven artifact made from plant material beneath her knees. Researchers are currently analyzing this fabric to determine its purpose and significance. This rare find offers valuable clues about clothing, burial customs, or ritual practices of the time.

The Significance of the Ballymacombs More Woman

Niamh Baker, Curator of Archaeology at National Museums NI, emphasized the importance of this find in deepening our understanding of ancient cultures. “This discovery provides a rare glimpse into the lives of people from our distant past, helping us understand how they lived, interacted with their environment, and developed their societies.”

Professor Eileen Murphy of Queen’s University Belfast, who conducted the osteological assessment, highlighted the tragic nature of the find. “Like many Iron Age bog bodies, this young woman met a violent end. Her head was taken away, but her body remained undisturbed for 2,000 years until its discovery by modern excavation.”

Future Research and Preservation

Following its transfer from the State Pathology Laboratory to National Museums NI, the Ballymacombs More Woman’s remains are undergoing conservation treatment to ensure their long-term preservation. Further scientific studies, including ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis, are expected to yield even more insights into her origins and life.

Hannah Crowdy, Head of Curatorial at National Museums NI, described the collaboration behind this discovery as a major achievement for Northern Ireland’s archaeological community. “Our museums play a crucial role in connecting our rich heritage to the present day. This discovery is not only a fascinating research opportunity but also an important reminder that the Ballymacombs More Woman was once a person, with her own story.”

Upcoming Symposium

To further explore this remarkable find, National Museums NI and Queen’s University Belfast will host a symposium titled Digging into the Bog: Archaeological Finds & the Work of Seamus Heaney at the Seamus Heaney HomePlace. Experts will discuss the Ballymacombs More Woman and the broader significance of bog bodies in understanding the past.

This discovery serves as a compelling reminder of the enduring mysteries of history and the invaluable insights archaeology continues to provide.
