'Transparent' Stone Blocks: the strangest artifacts in the Luxor Temple

One of the most interesting and not very well known discoveries made in The Luxor Temple is the concept of "transparency," whereby certain carvings complement each other from opposite sides of the same stone wall, creating a new whole. This effect is achieved through an exceptional level of technical precision and a deliberate intention to create a new, more intuitive understanding of a concept. Another related concept called "transposition" involves arranging key elements to create multi-layered connections across different walls. These principles are similar to the modern psychology concept of "Gestalt," whereby the whole is different from the sum of its parts. These discoveries bring a new dimension to the interpretation of ancient Egyptian texts and suggest a unique way of representing ideas through symbols.

Archaeologists surprisingly unearthed a 3,000-year-old furnace still buried in the ground

Archaeologists have uncovered a 3,000-year-old bakery in Metsamor, Armenia, astonishingly, still housing several sacks worth of flour embedded in the soil. The discovery was made within the remnants of a large structure, housing multiple ovens, which had succumbed to a fire.

The Transition of Space: From Public Function to Bakery.

"The flour has been preserved in the form of bright spots. At first glance, it looked like light burned ash. Thanks to flotation (rinsing) we proved that it is flour, not ash,” reported the head of research, Professor Krzysztof Jakubiak from the Faculty of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw.

The flour had formed a layer several dozen centimeters thick. It is estimated that up to 3.5 tonnes of flour was originally stored in the building. Unfortunately, only a few sacks worth of organic material has survived over the centuries. It was primarily wheat flour that was used, and quantities point to large-scale production and a certain culture of bread making within the region, both at a micro and macro level.

Similar discoveries of flour have been made in the wider Armenian region, such as the fortress settlement of Tejszebaini (currently known as Karmir Blur), which belonged to the ancient Urartu kingdom. The Caucasus region has a history of using flour for divination purposes, which could potentially alter the interpretation of the building's function, but this remains to be examined further.

World’s Largest Bird Sculpture Took Artists 10 Years to Complete

Located in Chadayamangalam in Kollam district of Kerala, India, the sculpture of Jatayu is the world’s largest bird sculpture.

The idyllic setting of Kerala, India boasts incredible views of nature that are best seen from Jatayu Earth’s Center. A joint venture between the country’s tourism department and Rajiv Anchal, the nature park has been open since the end of 2017. It has since garnered a massive claim to fame; Jatayu Earth’s Center is home to the world’s largest bird sculpture.

The bird, also named Jatayu, has a staggering set of measurements. It is 200 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 70 feet tall. The sculpture features meticulous details you wouldn’t expect at such a large scale, including individually decorated and layered feathers. Jatayu’s impressive wings splay onto the ground which allows visitors to walk on top of the figure and climb onto his talons and head. They’re meant to go inside of Jatayu as well. The bird’s body doubles as a roof for the Earth Center’s building—making this work of art a functional one. It comes as no surprise that this incredible structure took Anchal and his team 10 years to complete.

Besides being a wonderful feat of design and architecture, there's also significant context to the massive sculpture. Jatayu is a symbolic figure in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Known as a “noble bird of divine origin,” the legend is that he tried to rescue Sita, the wife of the famed Lord Rama (an incarnation of Vishnu and Krishna). Sita was being abducted by the demon king Ravana, and Jatayu came to her defense.

After battling with Ravana, the king cut off Jatayu’s left wing and escaped with Sita. Jatayu Earth’s Center decided to pay tribute to the noble figure's's dedication to women’s safety and honor it with this gigantic statue. The sculpture also symbolically recognizes a “bygone era when humans, animals, and other living forms care for each other and fellow beings lived peacefully on this Earth.”
