Ancient Grape Mill in Perre Set to Be Revived After 1,800 Years

January 27, 2025

The ancient city of Perre, once a key city in the Kingdom of Commagene, is on the brink of a fascinating revival. An 1,800-year-old grape processing mill in the area is set to be restored, blending ancient techniques with modern technology. This initiative will not only preserve a vital piece of history but also boost the city’s tourism appeal.

Perre: A Historic Hub of Culture and Trade

Perre, located in what is now Adıyaman, Turkey, was one of the major cities in the Kingdom of Commagene, a Hellenistic-Persian kingdom that flourished between 163 BC and 72 AD. The city’s strategic location made it a key stop along trade routes linking other important cities like Samsat and Malatya. Historical sources describe Perre as a place with beautiful water sources, and the Roman fountain still continues to flow today.

Perre’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its monuments, rock tombs, and religious diversity, which blended Persian, Greek, and local influences. The city's role in the ancient kingdom, coupled with its impressive ruins, makes it an important site for both history lovers and tourists.

The Project to Revive the Ancient Grape Mill

In an exciting move, local authorities have launched a project to restore the ancient grape mill, which was used for winemaking 1,800 years ago. This restoration aims to not only preserve the mill’s historical significance but also bring the ancient winemaking process back to life, offering visitors a hands-on glimpse into the past.

Governor Osman Varol shared details about the project, explaining that the grape mill will be restored using traditional tools and methods, along with modern technology. Visitors will be able to observe winemaking techniques from the past, including the use of lever presses, which were used in grape mills centuries ago.

A Journey Back in Time

The project’s restoration will be presented in four stages, showcasing the entire winemaking process as it would have been done in ancient times. Governor Varol emphasized the importance of the project, noting that the restoration will turn the site into an interactive experience for both local and international tourists.

Ongoing excavations in Perre are unearthing more of the city’s ancient past, adding to its appeal as a historic destination. The Culture and Tourism Directorate, alongside local authorities, is working tirelessly to ensure the success of the project, aiming to create an immersive experience for all who visit.

Perre’s Rich Cultural Legacy

The revival of the grape mill is just one part of Perre’s ongoing transformation. Known for its stunning ancient monuments and rich cultural history, Perre continues to draw attention as a significant historical site. The upcoming restoration promises to offer an unforgettable experience that connects visitors to the traditions and craftsmanship of ancient times.
