Mexico: Tourist climbed a Mayan pyramid with locals shouting "Sacrifice her"!

December 8, 2022

A very close contact with the (old) Mexican tradition had a tourist who visited the archaeological site of Chichen Itza in the province of Yucatan, in southeastern Mexico.

The tourist decided to ignore the regulations and climb the steps of the Temple of Kukulkan (one of the most famous monuments of the Mayan civilization) where she began to dance. Apparently, it made a lot of sense to her (we don't know if she intended to rip off TikTok or something, although she did manage to end up there herself).

On the other hand, those who were present got really upset with her audacity because "this woman did not respect the rules", so they all started cursing her together, shouting "jail, jail, jail" and "lock her in". But the catchphrase that stole the show was "sacrifice her," an exhortation that winks at the ritual human sacrifices practiced by Mexico's pre-Columbian civilization.

According to local media Mercopress, Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has banned climbing the monument's steps since 2008, with fines ranging from US$2,500 to US$5,000. In previous incidents, the authority in question had said that violators would be punished under the Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic and Historical Monuments and Zones.

Fines are ok, since she didn't experience ‘Apocalypto’ she should consider herself pleased.
