Where history meets culture: Heritage sites become ‘vibrant destinations’
In an effort to boost cultural tourism, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a new initiative to transform 15 major archaeological sites into “vibrant, experiential cultural destinations”.
The selected heritage sites include Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Adichanallur, Sarnath, Hastinapur and Leh Palace, among others. These locations are set to undergo infrastructure upgrades aimed at preserving India’s historical legacy while making them more appealing and accessible to both domestic and international tourists.
The plan—unveiled in the Union Budget 2026–27—intends to enhance visitor engagement through curated walkways, interpretation centres, immersive storytelling experiences and on-site conservation labs, effectively bringing ancient civilisations and historical narratives to life for visitors.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to position tourism as a key driver of economic growth, employment generation, and regional development, with heritage and culture placed at the heart of India’s tourism roadmap.
