Marine Mission Event Marks World Wetlands Day in Jersey
More than 30 conservationists, researchers, artists and environmental groups will gather at the Radisson Hotel today (2 February) for Marine Mission, a free public event marking World Wetlands Day in Jersey.
Now in its second year, Marine Mission highlights the importance of the island’s marine and coastal environment through exhibitions, talks and community engagement. Exhibitions will run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, followed by a programme of talks from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.
The event will open with an address by Environment Minister Steve Luce, followed by a welcome and archaeology update delivered by Bob Tompkins on behalf of Andrew Mitchell, Chair of the Jersey Ramsar Advisory Group.
Speakers include Donna de Gruchy, who will discuss the work of British Divers Marine Life Rescue in Jersey, and Emily Wagdin from Ocean Culture Life, who will explore how storytelling can deepen people’s connection with the ocean. Underwater photographer Grace Bailey will present her latest work, while marine biologist Dr Paul Chambers will speak about dolphins and other marine visitors to Jersey’s waters.
Additional contributions will come from Kevin McIlwee, Chairman of Jersey Marine Conservation, Alex Purdie from Alderney Wildlife Trust, and Robert Swain, skipper of the Jersey Duchess, who will share findings from his research into mobile marine species in Portelet Bay. Sophie Alexander will also provide a progress report on marine conservation projects undertaken by Ports of Jersey.
The evening will conclude with an open Q&A session, giving members of the public the opportunity to engage directly with experts. Artists will display marine-inspired works, and a range of environmental organisations will be represented throughout the event.
Kevin McIlwee MSc, Chairman of Jersey Marine Conservation, said: “Jersey’s marine environment is one of our most valuable assets, yet many people remain unaware of the vital role our wetlands and coastal waters play. This event is about bringing the community together to learn, to engage, and to take action.”
