Ancient Underground Chamber Discovered in Egypt’s Nile Delta
Archaeologists have made an exciting discovery beneath the ruins of Buto, an ancient city located in Egypt’s Nile Delta. Hidden for thousands of years, a mysterious underground chamber has been uncovered, offering new insights into the region’s rich past.
Advanced Technology Reveals Hidden Structures
To locate what lies beneath the surface, researchers used modern tools such as electrical resistivity tomography—a method that helps detect underground features by measuring how soil conducts electricity.
Before conducting ground surveys, the team analyzed satellite images from Sentinel-1, allowing them to study the area from above and identify promising excavation spots.
These combined techniques led to the discovery of a large buried structure estimated to be around 2,600 years old.
Layers of History Beneath the Surface
The site revealed multiple layers of history:
Upper layers contained pottery fragments and remains from the Roman and Ptolemaic periods
Deeper layers exposed a more ancient structure, possibly a temple or a hidden tomb
Archaeologists also uncovered mudbrick walls and religious objects, suggesting the site may have held spiritual or ceremonial importance.
International Collaboration and Scientific Study
The findings were published in Acta Geophysica and resulted from a collaboration between researchers from Cairo University, University of Manchester, and University of Oxford.
This international effort highlights how modern science and teamwork are transforming archaeological exploration.
A City with a Deep Historical Legacy
Buto—now known as Tell al-Fara’in—is one of Egypt’s oldest cities, dating back to around 3800 BCE during the Predynastic period.
Over centuries, it developed into a major religious and trade center, experiencing repeated phases of destruction and rebuilding before remaining active until the Islamic era in the 7th century CE.
What Comes Next?
Researchers plan to continue excavating deeper layers using even more advanced technology. Their goal is to uncover older structures and possibly reveal new artifacts that could further illuminate the history of this ancient city.
A Window Into the Past
This discovery offers a fascinating glimpse into Egypt’s early civilization. As investigations continue, the hidden chamber at Buto may unlock even more secrets, bridging the gap between ancient history and modern science.
