Mysterious Stone Engraving Discovered in Thai Jungle

May 13, 2024

BURI RAM, THAILAND - A remarkable discovery was made in the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in Non Din Daeng district of Buri Ram when a family foraging for wild mushrooms stumbled upon a previously unknown stone engraving. The engraving, measuring 1.45 meters in height, depicts a woman in traditional attire with her left arm raised above her head. The image was found on Khao Krachiao mountain on a serene Sunday.

Local mushroom forager Pramul Kongkrathok and his family were exploring the dense forest when his granddaughter noticed the unusual stone figure. The Kongkrathoks, residents of nearby Ban Klong Pong, were astonished by the find. "It was like she was waiting for us," said Mr. Pramul, who immediately reported the discovery to the authorities.

The site has since drawn the attention of local officials and archaeologists, including Suthinan Promchai from the Phanom Rung Historical Park. "This could be a significant piece of our cultural history," noted Promchai, who has alerted the Fine Arts Department. Experts are expected to evaluate the engraving to ascertain its age and historical significance.

Pramul expressed hope that the site would be preserved properly. He suggested that it could potentially serve as a new spiritual and tourist destination. "This find not only highlights the rich cultural tapestry of our region but also underscores the importance of preserving our natural and historical heritage," he added.

The discovery is currently under the supervision of the Fine Arts Department, and further investigations are planned to uncover more about this intriguing artifact.
