Wupatki Pueblo: Arizona's Lava Flow Villages

Introduction

Wupatki Pueblo occupies a remarkable position within the high desert of northern Arizona.

Surrounded by volcanic landscapes, the settlement became an important regional center during the centuries following the eruption of Sunset Crater.

Its architecture, agricultural adaptation, trade connections, and dramatic environmental setting make it one of the most significant archaeological landscapes in northern Arizona.

The Volcanic Landscape

The region around Wupatki was transformed by volcanic activity.

The eruption of Sunset Crater deposited volcanic material across the landscape.
