The Comfort Cafe has been abandoned since 2018
A long-abandoned roadside café in Cambridgeshire is expected to be torn down as redevelopment plans move forward.
The former Comfort Cafe, located just off the A11 in Little Abington, has stood empty since 2018. Developers now want to replace the deteriorating structure with a new commercial building designed to meet modern standards and sustainability goals.
Planning documents note that land immediately east of the site was excavated in 1994, when archaeologists uncovered fragments of Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman pottery — indicating the wider area has significant archaeological interest.
Officials at South Cambridgeshire District Council have stated that prior approval is not required to demolish the existing building.
According to submitted documents, the café first opened in 1922 and became a well-known truckers’ stop before later catering more to car drivers. After closing in 2018, the property reportedly fell into disrepair and became associated with vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
The council is currently reviewing proposals for the new commercial development.
It’s always a strange contrast, isn’t it? A 20th-century roadside café sitting beside traces of life from thousands of years ago — and now both layers of history quietly shifting again.
