Ancient Roman Shipwreck Discovered Off Puglia Coast

Italy’s finance police announced on Tuesday the discovery of a large Roman-era shipwreck resting on the Ionian Sea bed off the coast of Puglia. The vessel, dating back to antiquity, still contains a cargo of amphoras, offering valuable insight into ancient maritime trade.

The ship was initially located in June 2025 during an inspection, but authorities delayed public disclosure to protect the site. According to the police, all parties agreed to maintain strict confidentiality to prevent looting and ensure the preservation of the site’s archaeological information while developing the best plan for intervention.

This discovery highlights the richness of Italy’s underwater cultural heritage and provides a rare opportunity to study Roman-era seafaring and commerce.
